Trail Work Day on Wentworth Trail
When: Sunday, Aug 10, from 9am – 2pm
Where: Wentworth Trail / Mead Base Trailhead Sandwich, NH 03227
Come volunteer with the Squam Lakes Association on Sunday, Aug 10, from 9am – 2pm, for a hike up Mt. Israel via Wentworth Trail to help maintain the path! We will start our day by meeting at the Mead Base Trailhead parking lot at 9am. From there we will hike toward the summit and use dirt working tools to clear water bars on the trail. Water bars divert water and runoff away from the path and help prevent erosion. Once we reach the top, we will eat lunch and celebrate a job well done before hiking back down to Mead Base. Bring your friends to enjoy this iconic route and help give back to the hiking community!
This will be a ~2 mile hike up Wentworth Trail to the summit of Mt Israel (~4 miles out and back). Participants should bring plenty of snacks, lunch, water, bug spray, hiking boots and extra layers. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own safety glasses, working gloves, and dirt working tools as well, but SLA can provide any of those materials if needed. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, or to sign up for this volunteer program, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336).

Volunteer: Weed Watchers Training Day
When: Sunday, July 13, from 10am – 2pm
Where: Squam Lakes Association, 534 US Rt 3, Holderness, NH 03245
Join the Squam Lakes Association on Sunday, July 13, from 10am – 2pm, and learn how to identify aquatic invasive species. The Weed Watchers volunteer program enables anyone to help protect our lakes against the spread of invasive species by becoming an extra pair of eyes on the lake to spot and report potential invasions. After this training, you will be able to look for invasive species like variable milfoil on your own and know how to report sightings on Squam as an official Weed Watcher!
We'll begin by meeting in the great room for a presentation, and then we'll kayak on Squam to practice. Volunteers should bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing, as we will be out on the water for a few hours. The SLA will provide kayaks, life vests and aquascopes. Trained Weed Watchers will also have the opportunity to take out free kayak and canoe rentals to survey around the lake. For more information, or to sign up for this volunteer program, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336).
Variable milfoil was first identified in Squam Lake in 2000. Our efforts hand-pulling and using a Diver Assisted Suction Harvester for removal have proven successful; there has not been a new infestation of variable milfoil identified on the Squam Lakes since 2007. Our Weed Watcher network is crucial for finding invasive blooms so we can stop the spread in its tracks.
The Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character and resources of the watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes Region.

KISMET Film Screening at Ledge Brewing
We often find ourselves saying that it is hard to put the power of Kismet and the impact it has into words, but through watching this film, we think you will capture a glimpse of the importance of the Kismet journey.
Please Friday, June 27, at Ledge Brewing Company and enjoy the wonderful short film KISMET created about Kismet Rock Foundation by filmmaker Everett Ravens. The film will run from 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm and will be followed by live music from Food for Bears and a Brown Bag Raffle offering great prizes! $1 from each pint sold goes to Kismet.
Film Screening - 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Live Music - Food for Bears - 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Brown Bag Raffle - 4:30 pm - 9:00 pm
ABOUT THE FILM and FILMMAKER:
In our 24th summer, filmmaker Everett Ravens shadowed a Kismet student group for their full program week to document what Kismet is like through their eyes. Thank you so much to Everett who beautifully captured these students and their time climbing and living at the Kismet house.
Everett Ravens is a filmmaker based in New York city. Focusing on the minutiae of life, his films bring attention to the often overlooked or ignored, believing these are the stories filled with wisdom which can help to remind us all of our humanity.
Directors Relationship to Subject:
Climbing has allowed me to push past inner barriers and pull myself into a version of my life I never knew existed. When approached by longtime friend and Kismet board member, Ara Morton, about making a film focusing on the youth climbing program, which offered their students everything I had come to love, I knew it had to be fate.

Ecosystem Services
Local ecosystems provide many services for us that we may not even notice. Join the Squam Lakes Association at Chamberlain Reynolds Memorial Forest on Monday, June 23, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, for a hike where we will dive deeper in ecosystem services. Participants can expect to learn more about their local ecosystems on this 2.0 mile hike. We will stop at a few unique places along the trail to discuss the different types of services they provide.
Ecosystems services vary from cultural to biological, with each one providing important benefits. Understanding each of these benefits and their impact is important in how we appreciate our surroundings and how we work to conserve the land as well. This is a great program for anyone looking to learn more about their surroundings or if you just want to get outside more this spring!
For more information, or to sign up for this Adventure Ecology program, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336). The SLA also offers other Adventure Ecology programs throughout the year. These free programs are open to the public and cover a variety of nature and conservation related topics. The Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the LRCC AmeriCorps members at the SLA who perform important conservation work in support of the Association’s mission.

Wildfire in Northern New England

John Neely has been working with wildfire and controlled burning in New England for over 20 years. In addition he is engaged in research looking at the past fire history of the region from wildfire to indigenous burning.

The WFR course is the industry standard certification for guides and trip leaders.
Our new hybrid format begins with three weeks of online learning including readings, videos, and quizzes. You will spend 10 to 15 hours each week in the online portion and be required to finish assignments to progress. You will complete your course with a 5-day in-person program focusing on skills and scenarios. These are the last 5 days of the listed course dates.
There will be one evening sessions on the 3rd day of the in-person portion (subject to rescheduling based on local weather and other logistics). Your rescue gear needs to be packed and ready to go at any moment throughout the course. Please refer to and follow the WFR Gear List closely, and contact us with any questions you may have.
NOLS provides its own CPR certification within this course. It incorporates the American Heart Association’s 2020 curriculum guidelines with wilderness protocols to deliver a set of skills that is pertinent to our use in a wilderness setting.
Bad things happen outdoors and usually in bad weather! So, be prepared for the weather…dress in layers that you can be removed indoors or in the sun, and layer up when we go outside. Full rain protection is a necessity, both rain tops and pants. Your comfort and ability to pay attention during this intense course will be helped if you stay well-hydrated and have snacks on hand to munch during class. The course ends with a written exam and a scenario-based practical exam. You must score 70% or better on the written exam and pass the practical exam to be eligible for certification. It is your responsibility to pass the exams on your own, and to let us know throughout the course when you are finding challenges and needing additional help. It is our job as educators to help you know where you are succeeding and where we see you are needing additional help, so that you can focus your energies and be successful at course end.
The course ends near 6PM on the last day with the exams, student evaluations of the experience, and graduation. Please do not make travel plans that require an earlier departure or you will have to make alternative testing arrangements at a later course.
Additional Details
You will receive access to an e-version of the text and handbook during the online portion of the course – you can print the handbook if you like. The Wilderness Medicine Field Guide will be given to you on Day 1 of the course.
